FACEBOOK: Stop Forcing Your Users Into Hiding

Nepal MP Sunil Pant asks Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to recognize third genders

We just received an urgent email from our friend Sunil Pant, a Member of Parliament in Nepal and the only openly gay MP in Asia. Sunil reached out to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, asking him to make an easy change to recognize users of all gender identities.

Nepal's government recently joined India, Pakistan, and Australia in recognizing "third gender" identities - a term for people whose gender does not fit clearly into male or female checkboxes. These countries now issue legal ID cards with a third gender on them. But right now Facebook is forcing transgender and gender variant people to live a lie every time they log on by requiring them to select either "male" or "female" when creating an account. Facebook refuses to recognize other identities saying "people can already opt out of showing their sex on their profile".

Sunil is so serious about this issue, he has shut down his Facebook account until Zuckerberg agrees to meet him. Facebook sees itself as a progressive company and they care about how they look in the media. If enough of us call on Mark Zuckerberg to meet with Sunil, he will have to listen. We'll deliver your signatures directly to Facebook headquarters.
Tell Facebook it's time to allow trans and gender variant users to be visible, recognized and - most importantly - respected.

To: Mark Zuckerberg

Nepal, India, Pakistan, and Australia legally recognize third genders, but Facebook refuses to offer additional gender options. Not only are you forcing transgender and gender variant people into the closet, but you are also making them violate Facebook's Terms of Use by lying about their legal identity.

Meet with Nepal MP Sunil Pant to figure out a way to resolve this issue and recognize a right that many have fought so hard to secure.
