Cuban trans activist released – after wrongful conviction!
Brenda Díaz was detained and sentenced to 14 years in a men's prison after protesting against the government. After a long battle, she was finally set free in early 2025.In February 2022, Cuban trans activist Brenda Díaz was detained and later sentenced to 14 years in a men's prison on charges of "public disorder and sabotage," following her participation in an anti-government protest on July 11, 2021.
While imprisoned, she faced physical assaults from both police and fellow inmates. After defending herself from an attempted rape by another prisoner, she was punished with 14 days in solitary confinement. She was also denied access to medical care and basic necessities – such as the ability to shower for up to 12 days– in direct violation of Article 50 of the Cuban Constitution, which affirms: "Everyone has the right to have their health cared for and protected."
In response, local activists launched a petition demanding Brenda's immediate release. More than 12,000 people from the All Out community signed in support.
After four years, Brenda Díaz was finally released in early 2025, along with other prisoners detained during the 2021 protests. We are deeply grateful to the thousands of All Out members who stood in solidarity to fight this injustice.
