EU Commission revives plan to strengthen equality protections
When the European Commission tried to withdraw its proposal for the Equal Treatment Directive, more than 33,000 All Out members spoke out to defend equality. Thanks to this collective action, the Commission reversed its decision, keeping hope alive for stronger EU-wide anti-discrimination protections. Now, all eyes are on EU Member States – key countries are still blocking progress, and unanimity is needed to make the Directive a reality. When the European Commission announced plans to withdraw its draft Equal Treatment Directive earlier this year, it sent shockwaves through our community. The law promised something historic: extending anti-discrimination protections beyond employment and into everyday life.
But we refused to let equality be sidelined. Together with ILGA-Europe and other partners, All Out members delivered a clear message: equality is non-negotiable. More than 33,000 people signed a petition demanding the directive stay alive. Days later, the Commission reversed course.
This is a huge step forward – but the fight isn't over. Now, all eyes are on EU Member States. Key countries are still blocking progress, and unanimity is required for the Directive to become law.
