Ghana’s 2021 Anti-LGBT+ Bill Rendered Void

Ghana’s 2021 Anti-LGBT+ Bill Rendered Void

Ghana's harsh legislation rendered void, but the fight continues!

In 2021, several Ghanaian parliament members introduced one of the world's harshest anti-LGBT+ bills. The legislation sought to criminalize identifying as LGBT+, forming LGBT+ organizations, and even showing support as an ally. As LGBT+ Ghanaians faced a world of fear and uncertainty, they were not alone.

Once activists started a petition, All Out members from around the world rallied to show solidarity, resulting in over 80,000 signatures.

In 2025, following Ghana's general elections and the formation of a new Parliament, the anti-LGBT+ bill was rendered void as the outgoing President refrained from signing it into law. This was a clear testament to the effectiveness and power of international pressure and global solidarity.

Significant challenges remain. LGBT+ Ghanaians face a dramatic rise in discrimination and violence, and Ghana's newly elected President has pledged to strengthen anti-LGBT+ laws. Yet we can acknowledge what's possible when we unite.

We will continue standing with Ghana's LGBT+ community, ready to act when needed. But to do this, we need your help! Join us as an Equality Champion and help All Out continue fighting for love and equality.
