Watching half of the Italian Senate cheering and clapping when the anti-LGBT-phobia law was rejected in October 2021 was deeply hurting for many queer folks in Italy.
But our partners at Certi Diritti were quick at reacting and immediately worked with other Italian organizations (Arco, Gaynet, Agedo Nazionale and Arcigay) on a campaign calling for the adoption of a National LGBT+ Strategy that would protect the rights of the LGBT+ community by promoting equal treatment and anti-discrimination guidelines for LGBT+ people.
Italy had its first National LGBT+ Strategy from 2013 to 2015. Still, it was never renewed, despite being a requirement from the European Commission, which approved its own LGBT+ Equality Strategy 2020-2025 in November 2020.
Over 13,000 Italian members of All Out jumped into action and got it done!
On October 6, 2022, after seven years, Italy finally adopted a new National LGBT+ Strategy. The document lacks detailed references to deadlines, resources and monitoring activity, but it’s a first step in the right direction.
We will continue to work to ensure that the strategy's commitments are met.
