Malawi Pride becomes reality!
In Malawi, being LGBT+ is criminalized. But brave local activists still managed to celebrated a historic Pride - with the support of All Out members. In Malawi, where consensual same-sex relationships can still lead to prison sentences of up to 14 years, holding a Pride event is an act of extraordinary courage. In 2021, Malawi made history with its first-ever Pride march. But organizers weren’t sure it could ever happen again.
And yet—against the odds—it did.
On 17. August 2024, thanks to the unwavering support of the All Out community, our brave partners at Nyasa Rainbow Alliance brought Pride back to Malawi.
Malawi Pride was vibrant, powerful, and deeply moving. Over 100 people gathered—some publicly celebrating their identity for the first time. They sang, marched, and waved rainbow flags and signs, boldly spreading a message of love, dignity, and equality.
But the celebration didn’t stop there. Nyasa Rainbow Alliance also hosted a series of powerful panel discussions with LGBT+ rights activists, lawyers, and religious leaders from across Malawi, exploring ways to move forward in the fight for equal rights.
These incredible moments were only possible because of the donations of hundreds of All out members, jumping into action. Their support made this historic Pride celebration happen.
Here are some quotes from the Malawi LGBT+ Community:
- “The moment I was connected to Nyasa Rainbow Alliance, I was welcomed with open arms into a community of understanding and acceptance, somewhere I could be myself without shutting down parts of myself.”
- “I was expelled from my home just because I’m LGBT+. But Nyasa Rainbow Alliance has been of great help in helping me with counseling and affirmation.”
- “You can’t be safe out there. I have received a lot of threats simply because I’m a lesbian. So when I heard about Nyasa Rainbow Alliance, it made me feel safe that someone actually fights for us.”
