Supporting an ally in Italy

Costantino is a straight firefighter who marched in Rome’s 2017 Pride parade in his uniform. A few weeks after the march he received a letter from his employers accusing him of “shaming and ridiculing” his colleagues.

Costantino faced a disciplinary hearing and he was even at risk of getting fired.

We needed to tell the Italian National Fire Corps that no one should be fired for supporting equality, so in partnership with Rome Pride and several other Italian organizations, we launched a campaign in support of Costantino.

More than 55,000 people signed the petition in support of Costantino – and we won! Thanks to the global pressure, he still has his job and a precedent has been set for other public service workers who want to stand up for LGBT+ rights.
