ITALY: SAY NO TO ANTI-LGBT+ CENSORSHIP IN SCHOOLS

Take action to defend the rights of all students and protect freedom in education!

Update – March 6, 2025: Italy’s far-right Lega party has introduced a new bill significantly escalating the previous version. This latest proposal would ban any discussions about gender identity, gender fluidity, and sexual orientation in schools and eliminate references to inclusive language. It would also impose stricter regulations on restroom and locker room access, enforcing divisions based exclusively on biological sex.

Update – November 21, 2024: As Parliament considers a dangerous law that aims to censor discussions on sexual orientation and gender identity in schools, the government has launched an investigation against the University of Sassari's “Queer Theories” course, with the intention of checking for possible criminal profiles or ideological manipulation of minors. This shows how the anti-LGBT+ censorship is already taking hold. We cannot allow censorship to take the place of freedom of teaching and school autonomy. Sign the petition now to oppose this authoritarian drift and protect everyone's right to a free and inclusive education!

--------------

A bill proposed by Laura Ravetto aims to ban the teaching of so-called "gender theory" in Italian schools, using a vague definition that opens the door to arbitrary and potentially dangerous interpretations (you can read it here in Italian). This unprecedented attempt at censorship represents a serious threat to educational freedom and school autonomy in Italy, limiting the discussion of crucial topics for respecting diversity.

"Gender theory" is a non-existent concept, used by conservative groups to spread fear and misinformation. It is not a "theory" being taught in schools, but a term invented to sow hate and division. Discussing gender identity and sexual orientation in schools does not spread ideologies, but offers tools for understanding and respecting LGBT+ people.

Providing scientifically accurate information about gender identity and sexual orientation in schools also provides vital support to young people who are exploring their identities. Denying this possibility means depriving many students of essential information to live authentically and safely. Censoring these topics would also have a devastating impact on the mental health and well-being of young LGBT+ people. If approved, this law would not only censor information on sexual orientation and gender identity in schools but also create a hostile educational environment for LGBT+ people, exposing them to increased discrimination and bullying.

Similar to other laws in Russia, Bulgaria, Hungary, and in Florida with the so-called "Don't Say Gay" law, this Italian proposal would prevent teachers from openly discussing LGBT+ issues, while undermining their freedom and professionalism.

Time is running out: a resolution against so-called "gender theory" (you can read it here in Italian) has been discussed and voted on in Parliament, paving the way for this harmful law.

Together, we send a clear message to the Italian Parliament and Government: schools must remain places of inclusion and freedom, where every student, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, can feel safe in educational spaces that respect their identity.

Do not let censorship prevail over the rights and education of new generations.

This campaign is created by Agedo Nazionale in collaboration with 42 other national LGBT+ rights organizations.

Italian Government and Parliament

The bill proposed by the Honorable Laura Ravetto not only undermines the freedom of education and the fundamental rights of LGBT+ people, but also represents a serious step backward for inclusive and secular education in our country.

Making scientifically accurate information about gender identity and sexual orientation accessible in schools is essential for promoting respect, understanding, and inclusion among young people. Preventing this means further isolating and stigmatizing LGBT+ people, increasing the risk of bullying and discrimination, with serious consequences for their mental health and well-being.

We ask that Italian schools remain spaces of freedom, secularity, and inclusion, not of censorship and discrimination.

Italy needs policies that promote equality and respect for all people attending schools, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, not censorship.
