Meta: Stop hate speech against LGBT+ people!

Meta is normalizing harmful speech against LGBT+ people on Facebook and Instagram. Sign the petition to demand Meta reverse these changes!

Meta has updated its content moderation policies, allowing – starting in the U.S. – speech on its platforms like Facebook and Instagram that depicts LGBT+ people as being mentally ill and promotes harmful stereotypes under the guise of "political discourse." These changes threaten the safety and dignity of LGBT+ communities worldwide.

The move by Meta will copy Elon Musk’s approach on X, with the replacement of professional fact checkers with so-called ‘community notes’. It is a cynical move designed to cosy up to the incoming Trump administration. This is all about Meta’s financial bottom line.

Meta's "Hateful Conduct" policy, which covers discussions on gender and sexual orientation now says it allows "allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation, given political and religious discourse about transgenderism and homosexuality and common non-serious usage of words like 'weird.'"
The policy no longer prevents users from saying things like “women are household objects or property” or calling transgender or non-binary people ‘it’.

Previously, such comments would have been subject to removal under the policy.

By normalizing such speech, Meta risks increasing hate and discrimination against LGBT+ people. This policy shift will have global implications, especially in countries with weak hate speech protections, exposing vulnerable groups to further harm.

We need to act now to protect LGBT+ people from the dangerous consequences of Meta's policies. Sign this petition to urge Meta's leadership to reverse these harmful changes and uphold its responsibility to ensure safe and inclusive online spaces for everyone. Your signature will directly pressure Meta to prioritize human rights over harmful rhetoric.

To Meta Platforms, Inc.: Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Joel Kaplan, Chief Global Affairs Officer:

Dear Meta Leadership,

We are deeply concerned about your recent changes to content moderation policies, which now allow harmful rhetoric targeting LGBT+ people under the guise of "political discourse." Specifically, permitting allegations of mental illness based on sexual orientation or gender identity fosters stigma and discrimination.

These policies contradict Meta's commitment to building inclusive communities. Such speech contributes to a hostile environment for LGBT+ people worldwide and risks real-world harm, especially in regions with weak protections against hate speech.

We urge Meta to reverse these policy changes immediately. Strengthen protections for LGBT+ people across your platforms by reinstating robust content moderation policies that prohibit harmful rhetoric targeting sexual orientation and gender identity. Take responsibility for fostering safe and inclusive online spaces for all.
