Supporting LGBT+ entrepreneurs in Kenya

In Eastern Africa, government neglect and discrimination keeps LGBT+ refugees out of the workforce. All Out members helped change that.

Many LGBT+ people in Uganda and other East African countries face unbelievable discrimination and violence, forcing them to flee their homes and seek refuge in a neighboring country. They can end up stuck in impoverished and homophobic refugee camps or unwelcoming cities for years, with very little resources or help. Transgender refugees often face additional challenges.

In order to survive, many LGBT+ refugees have no other choice but to resort to dangerous or illegal ways to make money, like sex work. Government neglect and hateful discrimination keep them out of the workforce, even though they want to work and have valuable skills and experience to offer.

All Out members stepped in to help change that:

In partnership with the Refugee Coalition of East Africa (RefCEA) and their SPARK Fund, we gathered business proposals from four groups of LGBT+ refugees – and All Out members helped fund every single business with their donations!
