FIFA ignored human rights concerns and LGBT+ activists when it selected Qatar as the host nation for the 2022 Men's World Cup. But we weren't going to let them get away with it!
As FIFA prioritized profits over safety, All Out members around the world stood up to hold FIFA accountable.
Dr. Nas Mohamed – a Qatari asylum seeker in the U.S. bravely came out as gay on the world stage – and demanded FIFA ensure the safety of LGBT+ players and fans. But he also spoke on behalf of Qatar's own LGBT+ community, who are forced to live in the shadows, in fear, and in danger. In Qatar, being LGBT+ can land you in underground prisons, where you can be tortured and forced to sign false confessions. In fact, same-sex relations are expressly forbidden by law, carrying a prison sentence of up to 5 years – and even the death penalty under Sharia law.
His petition was signed by nearly 100,000 people around the world and made it onto TV screens and newspapers across the globe.
But that wasn't all.
All Out, together with Swiss partner Pink Cross, staged a powerful demonstration at FIFA's front door in Zürich, Switzerland – demanding they kick away the hate and score a goal for love. The event was a huge success, and garnered headlines all around the world.
Then, as the World Cup began, All Out worked hard to shine a light on FIFA's continued failures. Throughout the tournament, rainbow flags were confiscated, fans and journalists were ejected from matches for wearing anything even resembling a rainbow, and some were even roughed up by Qatari security forces. All of this could have been avoided if FIFA had simply followed its own guiding principles when selecting World Cup host nations.
So, that's exactly what we're demanding from FIFA next!
Although the 2022 World Cup has just ended, we still have a responsibility to hold FIFA accountable for their hypocrisy and homophobia. We must make sure FIFA never again selects a country where it is illegal and dangerous to be LGBT+ to host the World Cup.
Help us ramp up the pressure on FIFA ahead of its 2030 World Cup selection process by signing our petition today – here!
