On the night of December 11th-12th, the Tunisian "Social Protection Unit" raided a private residence due to suspicion that it hosted LGBT+ people. In Tunisia, same-sex relationships are punishable by up to three years in jail.
Maya, a trans woman, was arrested under the suspicion of being “gay,” along with four other individuals. She was sentenced to six months of jail under article 230 of the Tunisian penal code, criminalizing same-sex relationships, and put in a men’s detention center.
There, they forcibly detained Maya with men and shaved her head. On December 21st, 2022, the First Instance Court issued a maximum sentence verdict against Maya, sentencing her to three years in prison under Article 230 of the penal code.
Activists in Tunisia started a petition with All Out, demanding her immediate release. And it worked!
More than 32,000 All Out members from around the world jumped into action for Maya.
Shortly after, her sentence was reduced to six months. And only three months later, she was released from prison after half of her sentence was served.
