In March 2023, Ugandan lawmakers approved the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which was one of the worst anti-gay legislations in the world. The bill would punish anyone “promoting homosexuality” with up to 20 years of prison, and anyone charged with “aggravated homosexuality” would face the death penalty. With guidance from local activists in Uganda, we launched a petition urging the Ugandan President to veto the bill. More than 70,000 All Out members signed the petition.
While the bill was being discussed, and later when the President finally signed the bill into law, we received reports of grave attacks against LGBT+ Ugandans. There was an urgent need for financial support as the LGBT+ community in Uganda faced increasing challenges. We shifted our focus to emergency fundraising and once again, the All Out community showed up, helping support more than ten local organizations.
