All Out recognizes the risks of artificial intelligence systems in reinforcing bias against queer people. So, together with partners Access Now and Reclaim Your Face, we launched a critical campaign to urge the European Union to enact strict regulations, including banning automated recognition of gender and sexual orientation within the EU and stopping the export of such AI technologies globally.
In April 2022, the European Commission introduced a legal framework that, while recognizing the necessity of such bans, was criticized for its vagueness and substantial loopholes.
In response, we intensified our efforts and, on June 6, 2023, just before a crucial EU Parliament plenary vote, we successfully delivered over 250,000 signatures supporting our petition.
On March 13, 2024, the EU Parliament passed the Artificial Intelligence Act, marking a crucial yet incomplete victory. The Act prohibits the automated detection of sexual orientation but fails to fully ban automated gender recognition, highlighting significant gaps that could compromise privacy and integrity. This legislation is a step forward but underscores the need for continued advocacy to fully protect the rights of LGBT+ people.
The journey to ensure AI technologies respect human diversity and rights is ongoing, and we can keep taking an active part in it only with your help.
